Learning in Motion

Navigating the Next Frontier

In 2025, ITCILO, a United Nations training centre, has been diving deep into foresight work around how learning might evolve. It all started with a collective brainstorm, somewhere between destinations, on a conceptual bus, exploring a simple but provocative question: could the travel journey itself become a mobile learning experience?

From there, the ideas went into overdrive. The team applied a structured foresight process to learning and mobility, looking across modalities, emerging technologies reshaping how and where learning happens, and future signals indicating our changing world. The result is a book, stylistically inspired by the world of ancient explorers, mirroring the process of the learning journey. It includes 24 signals and 4 learning futures that give a new perspective on learning and beyond.

The first part of the book, printed on a natural paper, show and explains the signals, each one with an illustration, and the learning futures, each one with a map and a collage. The second part, printed in 2 colours on coated paper, hosts the signals as cut-out cards and the learning futures as a foldable map.
